How can fires in heavy-duty mining vehicles be avoided?
Data derived from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) shows that a large number of mining equipment fires are due to ruptured hydraulic/fuel lines and failed fittings/gaskets and electrical short/arcing in power cable systems. In many cases these can be avoided by scheduling more frequent and thorough inspections, potential system failures may be detected beforehand to prevent catastrophic scenarios.
In an upcoming webinar related research that has previously been conducted by the Division of Resources and Energy in New South Wales – Australia, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) – USA and the Health and Safety Committee/GRAMKO of Svemin - the industry organization for mines, mineral and metal producers in Sweden will be reviewed.
As part of the webinar three different actual fire cases in which the automatic fire suppression systems activated but did not extinguish the fires will be further reviewed.
The webinar will be finalized with recommendations and best practices in order to secure the fire risks are eliminated or minimized on heavy-duty mining vehicles.
